Working together for better children and young people’s mental health

Children and Young People’s Mental Health Transformation Plan

Our Children and Young People’s Mental Health Transformation Plan sets out how we’re working together across the NHS, local councils, schools, voluntary groups, and with young people and families to improve mental health support for 0-25 year olds.

From June 2024 to June 2025, over 34,500 children and young people received support from mental health services across Cheshire and Merseyside – bringing us closer to our national target of 37,590.

There are now 31 Mental Health Support Teams working across 54% of schools and colleges in our region, offering early help before problems escalate, with plans to extend this to all schools by 2029/30.

Every area now has 24/7 mental health crisis provision, and specialist Mental Health Response Vehicles are being deployed alongside police and ambulance teams, with plans also in place to expand community-based services to alleviate A&E pressures.

Other focus areas include a new neurodevelopmental pathway and profiling tool to better support neurodivergent children and young people, a series of projects dedicated to tackling self-harm, sleep problems and screen time, and plans to redesign eating disorder services to make support fairer and faster.
