Throughout August people continued to pay their respects to the victims of the tragic events in Southport on 29th July. Our thoughts remain with Alice, Bebe and Elsie Dot's families and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

As part of the response to this terrible tragedy, multi-agency psychological support has been stood up to ensure that those who were directly affected, witnesses and first responders have access to trauma support.

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside also continues to work with NHS providers of mental health services, local authorities and NHS England to signpost children and adults to appropriate services.

You will no doubt be aware that the Thirlwall Inquiry – established to examine events relating to former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby – commenced its substantive hearings at Liverpool Town Hall on 10th September 2024.

As ever, my thoughts and those of everyone at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside are with the children at the heart of this case and their families and loved ones.

NHS Cheshire and Merseyside’s 2024 Annual General Meeting will be held on 26th September in Crewe. Anyone with an interest in health and care is more than welcome to attend. You can find more details and a link to register here.

Finally, as we say goodbye to summer and welcome the start of a new school term, I would urge parents to check that their child’s routine vaccinations are up to date and, if not, to contact their GP practice to arrange top-ups. Vaccination is, of course, the best protection against a number of harmful diseases.
