Sefton

Sefton is a vibrant and diverse borough and whilst overall health is improving, significant gaps in health and life expectancy remain between those living in the areas most and least deprived areas.

Sefton has 5 areas in the most poorest 1% in England and 5 areas in the least poorest 1% in England.

The ageing population is growing much faster than the national average, increasing future demand for health and care services. The number of people with long term conditions, sensory impairment, dementia, cancer and other health problems is growing, as is the number of children with complex health and care needs.

If Sefton were a village of 100 people:

  • 60 are living with a long-term health condition

  • 14 adults have depression

  • 71 adults are overweight or obese

  • 7 are smokers

  • 24 have under 30 minutes of weekly exercise

  • 12 are over 75 years old

  • 10 will die from heart disease

  • 28 will die from cancer

  • 3 adults under 40 have type 2 diabetes

  • 38 children are overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school

Bringing together Sefton Council, local NHS, voluntary, community and faith (VCF) groups and other organisations involved in improving health and care in the borough, Sefton Partnership has a shared vision:

“To deliver a confident and connected borough that offers the things we all need to start, live and age well, where everyone has a fair chance of a positive and healthier future.”

Sefton Partnership will shape and support the delivery of health and care for the borough, engaging with and involving local people in how best to meet their needs.

Key priorities

Our Sefton Partnership will enable health and care services to work more closely together to improve the health and wellbeing of the people and communities in Sefton that we serve.

The initial priorities for Sefton Partnership are:

  • Improving mental health

  • Tackling obesity

  • Supporting community resilience by developing resources to enable people and communities to improve their quality of life and reduce health inequalities

We will be using a whole life approach to tackling these priorities. This means our plans support local people from having the best start in life through to improving care for those in their older years. We will also aim to reduce health inequalities that lead to poor health and quality of life by adapting our work to the needs of our different communities across the borough.
